Actress Irene Gilbert ran LA acting academy

EUREKA, Calif.—Actress Irene Gilbert, who ran the Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre in Los Angeles for 20 years after persuading her mentor to open it in 1985, has died. She was 76.

Academy spokesman John Jack Rodgers told the Los Angeles Times that Adler died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at her son’s Eureka home on May 21.

Fire closed the school in 1991 and it was facing demolition when Adler died in 1992. Gilbert reopened the school in 1994 at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

Academy alumni include Benicio Del Toro, Mark Ruffalo and Salma Hayek.

Gilbert appeared in 1970s and 80s television shows like “Barnaby Jones,” “Cannon” and “Emergency!”

Gilbert is survived by her son, Randall Garrett Herzon. A memorial is scheduled June 21 at the academy.
