New appointment for Alzheimer’s Australia

Alzheimer’s Australia has appointed the executive director of the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI), Professor David Ames, as its new chief medical advisor.

Professor Ames will provide advice and comment on medical issues relating to dementia, assist with new briefs and projects undertaken by the organisation, and maintain involvement with Alzheimer’s Australia seminars and conferences.

As a clinician and researcher, Professor Ames has gained wide-ranging experience in his field in both the UK and Australia. His main research interests are new drug treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, and the care of the depressed elderly.

Professor Ames remains a member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel of Alzheimers Disease International and chief investigator of the CSIRO Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) study. He has published widely including over 160 peer-reviewed journal articles and has co-edited 18 books.

Also on his list of accomplishments is a previous stint as secretary of the Section of Psychiatry of Old Age of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatrists; membership on the board of directors of the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA); and editor of the journal International Psychogeriatrics and the IPA Bulletin.
